Heating problems got you down? Let us help!
I have gas heat
- High Heat Bill?
A high utility bill could be caused by an outdoor unit not working efficiently.
- Unit not running?
If the outdoor unit is not running a circuit breaker could be tripped. Check and reset. If the breaker continue to trip, do not reset because resetting more than once could cause more damage. If it continues to trip, set the thermostat to emergency heat and call Conn's Heating and Air for a system diagnostic check.
Temperature inside not matching your theromostat?
- First check to see if the outdoor unit is running
If the outdoor unit is not running properly it cannot heat the inside of your house to the proper temperature setting. Check the outdoor unit to see if ice has formed.
If ice has formed on the unit turn the unit on Emergency Heat, then call Conn's Heating and Air to diagnosis the problem.
- But my unit is running...
If the outdoor unit is running and the lines running to the house are not hot it will not satisfy the thermostat. Put the thermostat to emergency heat and call Conn's Heating and Air to diagnosis the problem.

Wait! I see smoke coming from the outdoor unit!
- When the system goes into defrost it shuts off the outdoor fan motor. Once the fan motor is turned off the system sends hot refrigerant to the outdoor coil to melt the ice. The system then turns on the electric heat strips to heat the house. As a result of the system melting the ice, steam will come out of the top of the outdoor unit. This will make it appear as if smoke is coming out of the unit. Seeing smoke/steam during this process is normal.

I have gas heat
System not heating properly? System constantly running?
- If the system is in a lock out mode or if a high temperature limit switch is open some systems run the indoor blower to cool down the heat exchanger. If you turn the system off using the thermostat and turn it back on this will reset the control module. Once it is reset the system will go through an operation system check. If it still isn't heating, call Conn's Heating and Air for a diagnosis of the problem.
My system is starting up and then shutting off
- Normally when a system is starting up and then shutting off it means the flame sensor is dirty. Only a qualified technician can properly clean the sensor, so please call Conn's Heating and Air and schedule an appointment today.
Nothing is working
- If the system is in a lock out mode it will not operate. Turn the system off at the thermostat and back on it will reset the control module it will go through a sequence of operation. If it still isn't heating call for a diagnoses of the problem.
Odor coming from unit
- This could be a gas leak. Immediately shut off gas valve and call Conn's Heating and Air to diagnosis the problem
Carbon Monoxide Detector going off
- This is a sign of incomplete combustion. A yellow flame is a good sign. Turn off the system, and shut the gas valve off. Call Conn's Heating and Air for a diagnosis of the problem.
